Natural Teeth Whitening- Home Remedies

My father always told me that healthy teeth are yellow, not white. But aside from my dad, not many of us actually like our teeth looking yellow. If you are like me, you don't want to use harmful chemicals in your mouth. Not only are they toxic, a while ago I tried one of the over the counter teeth whitening products and found that they painfully aggravated my gums during application as well as created a prolonged sensitivity to cold. My personal experience was then corroborated by others, and I came to learn that whitening your teeth with these products come at a painful price.

So what do conscious consumers do? Why, we arm ourselves with collective wisdom through research of course, and we create the solution at home, using safe, natural, and affordable products.

Here is some advice before begining any teeth whitening home remedies:
  • While baking soda is a cleaning agent and deodorizer, and may get rid of stains and make the teeth sparkle more, it is also very abrasive, and its regular use has the potential to damage the enamel of the teeth. From my own experience, even short-term use of baking soda tooth paste causes increased sensitivity to my teeth and gums

  • Some home remedies you will find on the internet invlove the use of lemon juice. Citric acid in lemon juice and orange peels is another popular way to whiten your teeth at home because of its natural bleaching properties. But citric acid eats away at the enamel and speeds up tooth decay. My mother, who ate sliced lemons, was the first to warn me of the damaging effecs of lemons an teeth and always advised me not to follow in her footsteps. "Do as I say, not as I do."

  • Please remember that anything in excess can be harmful, so do good research and use your best judgement as to the frequency and duration for any home whitening treatment.
After doing the research, my number 1 choice for natural teeth whitening at home is.....

Olive oil!

SO easy!! Every household should have olive oil. Requires no mixing, no prep work. Simply put some olive oil on a cotton ball or some toilet paper and rub on your teeth for instant effects. However, this remedy comes with 1 very important warning everyone should know... Olive oil rub will produce a naturally white smile, and is not meant for an artificial, professionally bleached look. So if you are into the artificial look, make an appointment for whitening with your dentist, and combine it with a trip to the tanning salon.
